Why We Love Mathnasium Point Loma STEAM Camps!

By Courtney Daly-Pavone June 3, 2022

What's Happening @  Mathnasium Point LomaThis Summer?

Weekly STEM Themes!

Week 1 & 2 Island Escape & Mad Science

Week 3 Engineering Gliders and Bridges

Week 4 Space Mars Lander Challenge

Week 5 & 6 Drones Program Navigate Your Own Drone

Sound Exciting?

Island Escape Week kids need to solve multiple challenges and puzzles in an effort to make their way off the island and back home.

Next up is Mad Science Camp which is an in depth escape room game where the kids have to solve different math and verbal challenges to save the Sun from a mad scientist. They have to  find out how to break into his computer, they can disarm the laser that is pointed at the sun. Once they prove they can solve a challenge such as this, they get to build their own and challenge their teammates to solve.

Engineering Week kids can build multiple structures, including an arcade game made only of household items.

Mars Lander Challenge Week kids will be taken step-by-step through a true engineering design process and construct a mock lander.

Drones Week kids will learn to program their drone to navigate an obstacle course of their construction. Students must already be enrolled in one of Mathnasium math programs- either the monthly membership or the 10 or 20 Summer math session packs.

According to Heather Ballesteros of Mathnasium Point Loma, "Every camp has a HUGE math component. The kids are always astonished at how they can actually program a drone and make it do what they want by some toggling on the computer. They also love to build the course the drone has to navigate and see how far they can challenge themselves. They really can't believe that they were able to make a machine move. They LOVE it. We have repeat attendance every year from some of the same kids."

What Makes Mathnasium Summer Camp Unique?

According to Ms. Ballesteros, "We make sure it's engaging the ENTIRE time they are with us and that the student has at least one OMG moment each day- a moment where they are proud of their achievement. We know that learning isn't just about the doing, it's about the magic of what knowledge can bring you. Many of the STEM camps are also already used in schools in San Diego- we adopted from teachers around the city."

I can personally attest to Mathnasium having a positive impact on their students and campers. My own child has attended Mathnasium for the past year, and has made great strides in Math. He no longer fears equations, and has fun while learning. The camp programs are just what children need to continue learning over summer break in a playful, stress free environment!
