Check Out Family Friendly Sunday @ The Mingei Museum!

By Courtney Daly-Pavone January 18, 2022

The Mingei Museum in Balboa Park is a folk art museum. What is Folk art? Folk art can be described as art that is of the people, for the people and by the people.

We went to the Mingei for Family Friendly Sunday. The museum's teaching artists taught us how to make Japanese Daruma dolls.

These traditional Japanese dolls symbolize perseverance and luck. Japanese Daruma dolls, often red, rounded, and limbless figures, are used for wishing. While making a Daruma, one should make a wish or goal in mine while painting. Our Daruma dolls were made with air drying clay (no kiln necessary), and paint.

It was a fun relaxing activity. The class was filled with students and their parents of all ages from toddler to teen. Family Friendly Sunday happens every third Sunday at The Mingei Museum, and registration is required. Children can receive free admission to Family Friendly Sunday if they complete a scavenger hunt at the museum.

After making Daruma dolls, we visited the museums permanent collection which included Daruma, and Folk art that spanned the globe. My child discovered a love for Folk art last Sunday. Art tells a story, and folk art really brings a cultural richness, and engages one in a personal way. The newly renovated Mingei is such a treasure, and it was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Balboa Park!
