Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age, when children learn coding at a young age it prepares them for the future. According to Margaret Choi Lead Instructor at CodeWizardsHQ which offers live teacher-led coding classes & camps for kids, Coding helps children with communication, creativity, math, writing, and confidence. I spoke with Margaret about CodeWizardsHQ Summer Coding Camp, and the benefits of children learning code.
MACARONI KID: Why is it important for children to learn coding?
MARGARET CHOI: Learning to code has benefits for kids now and prepares them for the future. Coding teaches children important skills like computational thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning. It also builds personal skills like patience, communication, and perseverance. While coding itself is a top STEM career, the skills learned can also be applied to many other fields of study. Regardless of what your child is interested in, art or mathematics, a basic knowledge of code will prepare them for the future and open doors for new opportunities. Coding isn’t right for every child, but we encourage them to try and see if it sparks their interest!

How do you squeeze in a 12 week course into 1 week during the summer?
In our summer camp, students are immersed in 5 days of coding fun. Students get more face time with their instructors and they can take advantage of our beyond the classroom support too. Instead of 12 hours, campers get 15 hours of live instruction. We also provide recordings of each class with slides and class notes and offer daily live homework help.

Are kids pretty adept at learning code?
Yes! You’d be amazed at what our students build and the creative ideas they are able to bring to life. Students as young as 8 years old in our elementary school program start with block-based programming in Scratch. They build games from start to finish and many incorporate their own artwork and interests. In the middle school program and high school program, students jump right into Python, the same programming language that Google and YouTube use. By the end of the high school program, students are prepared for the real world and internships.
