Learning Loss During Distance Learning
More than half of public K-12 educators say the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant loss of both academic and social-emotional learning for students, according to a Horace Mann Educators Corporation report.
Thankfully, summer is an excellent time to catch up in math, and Mathnasium of Point Loma helps kids do just that! I spoke to Mathnasium's Director about it's impactful approach to teaching math.
MACARONI KID: 4 Out of 3 People Hate Math. Is Math A Subject Everyone Can Master?
MATHNASIUM: Absolutely! We build math knowledge upon what students already know - This helps kids learn quickly and boosts their confidence right away. Our method is based on the philosophy, "Children don't hate math. They do hate being confused and intimidated by math. With understanding comes passion, and with passion comes growth."
There Was A Lot Of Learning Loss This Year Due To Covid And Distance Learning, How Will Mathnasium Help Students Catch Up?
Now is the time to take action and get your student ready for next year. Studies show that the average child is 12 weeks behind in math. And once kids fall behind, it’s difficult for them to catch up on their own. Losses are often higher for math as compared to reading. The higher the grade level, the greater the loss. Mathnasium will find out exactly where your student is at with a diagnostic assessment and create a personal learning plan to get them on the right track. As they gain skills this summer, their confidence will grow. Rather than being 12 weeks behind, Mathnasium can set your child on the path to meeting and exceeding expectations.
How Does The Mathnasium Method Work?
Our proprietary method consists of three key components which are closely monitored and adjusted to address each child’s learning goals:
Assessments: Students start by taking a customized assessment which pinpoints their needs, allowing us to meet them where they are and take them where they need to go. These assessments continue throughout their Mathnasium instruction to ensure progress and skill retention.
Customized Learning Plans: We then design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master, and use a combination of proprietary materials and instruction techniques to ensure your child masters these concepts.
Specially Trained, Caring Instructors Who Teach: Mathnasium’s specially trained instructors implement the learning plan and work with each student to ensure they master the material. All teaching takes place during the Mathnasium session, and we don’t assign homework.
Is Math Instruction Woven Into The Robotics Camp?
Yes! There is a reason we call it Math in Motion. Math is the first building block in all of STEM. We are crazy about teaching math but also are excited to see our "Mathletes" develop their love of technology and engineering right here in our learning center. Our Math in Motion camp begins with 1.5 hours of drone pilot training that literally “weaves” in spatial dimensionality among other key math skills. After a short snack break, kids will transition to their customized math learning plan where they will work ONLY on the work they personally need to catch up, keep up or get ahead!
Summer Learning Loss Is A Fact, How Does Going To A Program Like Mathnasium Help Students Gain Math Skills?
In a typical year, a child can lose 4-6 weeks of Math skills during the summer. Couple that with the learning loss the pandemic has caused and students can find themselves moths behind in math when the new school year begins. Mathnasium will find out exactly what math skills your student has lost and create a learning plan designed for their specific needs. Rather than spending the first weeks of math class losing confidence and falling farther behind, students who spend the summer with Mathnasium can go back to school knowing that they are ready to keep up, or in many cases get ahead.
