I am a self-professed Nutcracker fanatic, and I almost thought I wouldn't be able to see it this year. Typically there are a half a dozen productions of The Nutcracker in San Diego during the holidays, but with Covid-19 things were looking pretty grim until Holidays in Your Car announced that The San Diego City Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at The Del Mar Fairgrounds for one day only Saturday December 19, 2020 for two shows at 5 PM and 8 PM.
Seeing The Nutcracker from the safety and comfort of your own car, count me in!
Directors Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich, formerly of the Boston Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet, have created a lavish production with their company of professional dancers. Fashioned after the choreography of the great Russian master, LevIvanov, who created the very first Nutcracker more than 100 years ago, the production is dazzling, with virtuoso dancing and opulent costumes. Children’s roles are performed by talented young dancers from the City Ballet School, the official school of City Ballet. A beloved tradition for many families, the show will be one of only a handful of outdoor Nutcrackers in the U.S., with two performances scheduled for December 19, at 5 PM and 8 PM, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
