Events Happening @ The Birch Aquarium in February

Tidepooling Adventures!

Tidepooling season runs December through March when minus tides reveal wider beaches and tide pools teeming with life. Sign up for a Tidepooling Adventure where trained naturalists will help you discover the wonderful world of tide pools!

For ages 2+ (tickets required). Under 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. Guests should expect to walk and stand for 1 hour, walk and balance on slippery rocks, and have the ability to bend and/or squat to look into rock pools.

Tidepooling Adventures do not meet at Birch Aquarium. Tidepooling locations are at Dike Rock, north of Scripps Pier in La Jolla, and False Point in Bird Rock. At all locations, guests will look for crabs, seahares, abalone, and even tiny colorful nudibranch sea slugs. Naturalists will teach guests what to look for when it comes to searching for octopus dens, and how to safely navigate slippery rocks. See website for details.  Tickets Birch Aquarium Members: $15 Public: $18 Visit aquarium.ucsd.edu.

Whale Fest @ The Birch!

February 8-16: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Weekends!

Winter is the peak time to see migrating Gray Whales in Southern California. Every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests will learn how to to spot whales from the panoramic Tide-Pool Plaza; get hands-on with whale biofacts like baleen and bones, learn about unique ways whales and dolphins survive in their aquatic home, dive deeper into whale evolution and conservation. Whale Fest is an opportunity for guests to become experts in local whale and dolphin species.

Weekend guests will meet whale scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego or NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center. These scientists study everything from the sounds whales make to the food they eat, and will discuss the latest whale research and conservation efforts. Weekends include additional activities and take-home crafts.
