We dropped into Toby's Candles & Soap Shop to make some unique gifts. We wanted to avoid the traffic on the freeways and the crowds at the mall. We wanted to personalize our gift, and be a part of the present making experience. We did that and got an extra gift, some history!
Toby's Candles & Soap Shop has been in Old Town for over twenty years. Prior to that, they had a store at Disney California , but Old Town the birthplace of California has a special connection to soap and candles. Back in the 1800's cattle could produce up to one hundred pounds of scrap fat used to make candles and soap. Candles were a precious commodity before SDGE! They were used in our daily lives.
Toby's Candles & Soap is a family owned business. You can watch skilled artisans sculpt candles that look like porcelain. You can also choose a wax mold, dip your own candle in a variety of shades to create a one of a kind look.
That's just what we did. My son chose a dragon, and aimed for a jade green shade. He had so much fun creating his own candle, learning about the candle making process, and it's historical connection to Old Town's early settlers.
