There are many Nutcracker performances coming to San Diego this holiday season. One stand-out show is The Moscow Ballet's Nutcracker, which also stars local San Diego children in the production.
If you haven't seen The Nutcracker, put it on your bucket list!
Music by Tchaikovsky, and an engaging story told through riveting choreography appeals to a cross section of audiences. Why? Because it's a timeless tale, a fabulous dream you don't want to wake up from. The show features world renowned dancers, over 200 dazzling costumes, stunning sets, towering puppets, and soaring birds. I interviewed stars from the upcoming Nutcracker performance coming to Copley Hall December 18th and got their take on this beloved ballet.
Anna Trofimova Audition Director with the Moscow Ballet also plays Masha's mother in the Nutcracker. She explained to me why this show is so iconic.
"At heart we still believe in miracles. In my opinion Tchaikovsky’s music for The Nutcracker immerses us in this state of mind and each one of us at any age could live a little Christmas tale. This atmosphere makes people look forward to come back next year and together with their families," said Trofimova.
This is Ms.Trofimova's second year performing in the show which runs for one day only in San Diego on December 18th. She explained that incorporating local talent in each performance city is the highlight of the show.
"It means that children from different states can be cast for different roles for young dancers in our show and perform on stage with a professional ballet company," said Trofimova.
One of the kids from San Diego performing in the Nutcracker this year is Isabelle Rice.
"It is exciting. It is also nerve wracking and there is a lot of adrenaline pumping through my body before I go on stage. But once I get on stage I am focused," said Isabelle who plays a snow maiden in the ballet.
The unique “Dance with Us” program gives young dancers the chance to perform on stage with the professionals, a real treat for aspiring ballet dancer Isabelle Rice.
"I love before the show when we get to watch the ballerinas warm up and stretch with no effort. I also think that it is a great experience to be with these people and to support my friends who also dance."
