San Diego Zoo Safari Park Walkabout Australia

An Experience for Animal Lovers

By Courtney Daly-Pavone September 7, 2018

The newly opened Walkabout Australia at San Diego Zoo Safari Park is worth the trip! My family went to the Walkabout exhibit, a 3.6 acre habitat with Australian Animals and plants all located in a lovely meadow.  Visitors can experience Walkabout by walking along a pathway strolling along a country road among Australian bottlebrush and eucalyptus trees.

What's the best part?

The animals aren't in enclosures, but instead are free to roam about.  This exhibit has a pathway without barriers.  The path leads guests to see animals found Down Under like  Western Gray Kangaroos, Rednecked Wallabies, and Brush Turkeys. Guests must remain on the path, but the Kangaroos and Wallabies are welcome to get quite close to visitors.

On our visit, I saw a Kangaroo hopping, something I haven't witnessed in forty years of visiting zoos! We also met new Australian Animals like the Cassowary and a Matschie's tree-kangaroo, plus several Magpie Geese.

At the far side of the grassland, an Aussie Animal Station provides a great view from a veranda.  Zoo keepers hold animal encounter sessions where guests can get up-close with animals like a Wombat, Echidna Blue tongued Skink, or Sugar Glider several times throughout the day.

Walkabout Australia explores the  connection between water and the animals and people that depend on it. A stream runs through the grassland area, pooling in a pond called a billabong by Australians. Its source is a larger wetland pond, where guests will see waterfowl like Radjah Shelducks, Freckled Ducks and Magpie Geese.

Get There!

Walkabout Australia is located at the base of the trail to Condor Ridge, adjacent to Tull Family Tiger Trail. Don't miss it, plan your day wisely there is so much to see and experience at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.  Create wonderful memories for you and your family, and teach your kids about animal conservation.
