FREE Entertainment, Prizes & Books!

Get Ready for the San Diego Public Library Summer Reading Program!

By Courtney Daly-Pavone May 30, 2018

Parents, the San Diego Public Library is your greatest resource.  Library branches offer FREE Entertainment for Children June st through August 1st to help promote their Summer Reading Program.  Free Shows include Magic Shows, Puppet Shows, Music Performances, Live Animal Presentations, African Drumming, Theater Performances, even a carnival at the Point Loma Hervey Branch, and more!

Short Attention Span No Problem!

These shows are perfect for all ages, and I have gone to the library with my child for years and enjoyed every performance.  They run between 30-60 minutes, so if you have a kid with a short attention span the presentations move quickly, and often the programs involve children by asking them to volunteer.  Music concerts where children can dance and sing-a-long! I will never forget an Irish Fiddler came to the library and her music brought joy to the children. Another fond memory, the San Diego Symphony performed to a live reading of a children's book at the Mission Hills Library.  It was such a moving performance.  Kids were introduced to the various instruments and learned how music can conjure various emotions.

Summer Setback?

The Summer Reading Program Aims To Conquer The Summer Slide, when many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. The Summer Reading Program rewards children for reading.  After you register them in the free program, kids must read a certain number of books, log their reading online, and return to the library to claim their prizes which include everything from Legoland tickets, free meals at a number of restaurants including Chipotle, toys and more!

Summer Reading is for All Ages Including Pre-Readers!

If your child hasn't started reading yet, you can still enter them in the program.  Reading to your child counts, and they have prizes for all ages.  Babies can enjoy the shows as well, and it's a great introduction to the Library Experience.  Don't hesitate to get your child a library card, you can check out everything at the library from books to DVD's, to museum passes, laptops, even guitars! Get to know your library this summer!
