Sally Ride Science Brings Free Classes to San Diego

Unique Classes and Camps Keep Kids Interested in Science

By Courtney Daly-Pavone May 21, 2018

Dr. Sally Ride broke ground being the first woman in space, but her legacy, Sally Ride Science a program which teaches children science in classes, camps, and libraries is breaking ground in more ways than one.

If you haven't heard about Sally Ride Science, it needs to be on your radar here's why:

-70% of fourth graders say that they love math and science, but by the time they leave eighth grade over half the students lose interest.

-Stem careers have higher salaries and offer more choices than other professions?

-Women are underrepresented in many stem fields.

Sally Ride saw that disparity, and wanted to share her love of science with humanity.  She wanted to level the playing field and attract more women and minorities into stem careers. Her camp at Sally Ride Science offers scholarships.  It also teaches science courses like Marine Mammals, Kelp Forests, and Messy Science at San Diego Public Libraries.  My son has been performing his own scientific experiments in our bathrooms for the past two years has finally found his niche in these classes which are free and open to anyone.  Did I mention the classes are taught by UCSD Professors?

According to Megan Lancaster Program Director at Sally Ride Science, "The STEAM workshops offered by Sally Ride Science are unique because of our connection to UC San Diego. We are able to call on undergraduates,  graduate students and even faculty members at UC San Diego and Scripps Institution of Oceanography to create and teach our innovative  and inspiring workshops. In addition, Sally Ride Science has a unique  focus on providing diverse STEAM role models. When Sally Ride became the  first American woman in space, she realized that young girls viewed her as an inspiring role model. She co-founded Sally Ride Science in part to  provide students with examples of women and men from many different  backgrounds doing exciting work in STEAM fields."

Sally Ride Science also works with teachers to connect classroom learning to real life careers and give students the tools to keep them engaged in science and technology.

Sally Ride Science has just launched a pilot program to  partner with schools and organizations to bring STEAM workshops to  communities around Southern California. Potential partners include  traditional schools, charter schools, scout troops, community centers or  any other entity or organization that reaches out to students in STEAM  fields. They have already partnered with Fallbrook School of the Arts  to offer a summer STEAM camp. The eventual goal is to pursue these  partnerships around the country.
