Flying Leatherneck Museum

Free Entry To Aircraft Museum

By Courtney Daly-Pavone May 2, 2018

The Flying Leatherneck Museum is the largest museum devoted to Marine aircraft twenty-seven in total! It is the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the incredible contributions made by Marine Corps aviators and their ground support personnel.  Admission is always free for all ages.

Don't Miss Open Cockpit Days

In May, The Flying Leatherneck Museum will have Open Cockpit Days.  Patrons can sit in the cockpit and feel like a real pilot! Take your little kids — and big kids — to enjoy a free day out in the sun. Cockpits of selected aircraft will be open May 26-27 between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Navajo Talkers Exhibit

The museum has several educational exhibits including the Navajo Talkers Exhibit. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Marines used Native American Navajo language for combat communications.  400 Navajo were recruited by the Marines, and the Navajo code was developed.  The Navajo code is the only spoken military code that was never deciphered.  The code remained classified until 1968. According to Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division Signal Officer, “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima”.  On display is the silver congressional medal of honor, and military uniforms of the marines that participated in the Navajo Code program.

Additional highlights include the Museum Hall of Heroes.  The Joe Foss exhibit is a must-see according to Major General Bob Butcher, "Foss was a leading ace in the marine corps with a distinguished career as Commissioner in the American Football League, Governor of South Dakota, and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor."

Did you know that several Marines also had careers as Astronauts in Nasa's space program? John Glenn is the most notable, and the Flying Leatherneck Museum pays homage to these trailblazers.

The Flying Leatherneck Museum is a great place to bring the family, and they also host small birthday parties for groups of twenty people or less.
