Culinary Corner Visits Meze Greek Fusion Gaslamp

Experience Greek Cuisine Downtown

By Courtney Daly-Pavone March 9, 2018

Meze Greek Fusion is a restaurant that is chic, and fun.  When you walk in the door it has the sophistication of New York's Soho without the pomp and circumstance.  Not only is the atmosphere festive, but it is very family friendly.  I checked out Meze on a Saturday evening for an early bird dinner with my son in tow (always best to dine early with your child).  The waiter greeted us like family.  He was very accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu.  We took his recommendations and started off with an appetizer Baba Ganoush which was rich in texture and flavor.  In Greece, the ingredients are local and fresh that's the standard, and Meze brings these ingredients to every dish, and it was apparent with every bite.  We moved on to our second appetizer Saganaki a fire burned on top of a skillet as the waiter brought this pan seared Greek cheese doused with Ouzo to our table.  My son marveled at the sky-high flames.  The waiter was professional and cautious as he extinguished the fire and yelled Opa! Having seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding twenty-times I got a warm feeling and my heart, and the appetizer gave me a warm feeling in my belly.  I was starting to like this place.

Our entrees were a Branzino, a fish with a side of pesto, served with rice and grilled zucchini, and squash, and beets, and a Lamb Shank with mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.  The meal was expertly paired with a Meze's house white a Greek wine.  There was little room for dessert, but my son always saves a space for sweets so we tried a dessert that resembles small doughnuts called Loukoumades.  They were made fresh still warm, served with Greek yogurt sauce, fresh berries and honey.  Every morsel of this meal was consumed even the vegetables, and my kid gave it the ultimate thumbs up saying "This place is cool."  If you have a picky eater, I recommend treating your child to gourmet food.  Start small and order an appetizer for them, get their palette used to fine food.  They may surprise you and ask for more.  Meze Greek Fusion has two locations- Gaslamp and Liberty Station.
